If you’ve been receiving a lot of calls from local numbers that you don’t know, you’re not alone.
Receiving Strange Calls from Local Numbers
This is the newest phone scam, and the goal is to get people to answer their phones by using local phone numbers. By using local phone numbers, the scammers hope to trick you into thinking it might be a number you know. Maybe a local doctor’s office or a friend or even a customer.
Usually if you answer these calls, the person on the other end will try to get personal information or to get you to sign up for services. These calls will lead to even more calls, and your number will be circulated to even more scammer lists.
What you can do?
- Place your number on the National Do Not Call Registry. While this might not stop the calls entirely, it can help.
- Instead of answering numbers you are unsure of, try returning the call instead.
Never give any personal information or credit card info to anyone that calls you out of the blue. Whether they offer computer help, say they’re from a utility company, or even a tax collector. You can always hang up and contact the company yourself if you aren’t sure.
And if you ever receive phone calls from anyone requesting access to your computer, even if they claim to be from Microsoft, hang up immediately and give us a call at 732-914-8324 or schedule an appointment to make sure your computer hasn’t been compromised.
